Yod ({literal})
EN — Transliteration: Yod
Letter Yod (י) of the Hebrew alphabet, with a numerical value of 10. The Divine Germ — The Smallest Containing the Largest.
I. Anatomy of the Mystery — The Path of the Yod
The Yod (י) is, without exception, the smallest letter in the entire Hebrew alphabet. In the Torah scrolls traced by the best scribes, the Yod is little more than a elongated point — a comma hanging slightly above the baseline, floating in space like a seed in the air.
This smallness is not an accident — it is a revelation. The Proto-Sinaitic ideogram represented a hand (yad, יָד) — organ par excellence of action, creation, giving and reception. That the hand has been reduced over the centuries to this simple point is one of the most meaningful developments in the entire history of writing: the divine Hand, in its absolute Transcendence, can only be represented by the most discreet of signs. The closer we get to the Source, the less there is to see — and the more there is to understand.
Its numerical value — 10 — is the first two-digit number, the first return to the One at a higher level. After the nine numbers of creation, the 10 says: the origin returns, but transformed, enriched by everything it has gone through. Grace is this movement: a return to the Source which is not a regression but a fullness.
The Kabbalistic tradition teaches that all other letters contain a hidden Yod in their route. Each letter begins with a dot placed on the page — a Yod — before the calligrapher stretches that dot into a line. The entire alphabet is an expansion of the initial Yod: the Creator condensing His infinite Power into one point, then unfolding it into twenty-two forms.

II. The Hand and the Seed — Yod as Expanded Origin
The name of the letter — Yod — is also the beginning of the most sacred divine Name: יהוה (YHWH). This coincidence is not fortuitous. The Hand (yad) is the first gesture of God in history: "And God said... and God did..." - each creative act is a gesture of the divine Hand. The Yod is therefore the letter of divine initiative, of the first action which precedes all things.
Jesus will cite the Yod explicitly in the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5:18), speaking of a iota — the Greek transcription of the Yod — which will not pass from the Law until all is accomplished. It is the declaration of God's absolute faithfulness to His word: even the smallest of His commitments will stand until the end. Grace loses nothing — not even a Yod.

III. Key Word Study — The Emanations of Yod
1. יָד (Yad) — “The Hand”
The divine hand (yad YHWH) is one of the most powerful images in the entire Hebrew Bible. It strikes (the plagues of Egypt), it carries (“I have engraved you on the palms of My hands”, Isa 49:16), it guides (“Your hand will lead me, Your right hand will take hold of me”, Ps 139:10), it creates (“Your hands have formed and molded me”, Ps 119:73). The divine hand is never a hand of gratuitous violence: it is the hand of the sculptor who shapes, of the father who holds, of the friend who supports in the fall. The Yod is this hand reduced to its essence — at the point of contact between God and His creature.
2. יְשׁוּעָה (Yeshua/Yeshuah) — “Hello, Complete Restoration”
The name Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ — Jesus in Hebrew) and the noun yeshuah (יְשׁוּעָה — full restoration, Soteria — σωτηρία) both begin with a Yod. Yeshuah comes from the root yasha (יָשַׁע — save, deliver, put away). The Hebrew salute is not a legal abstraction — it is an act of yad divine (hand): someone reaches out to someone who is drowning and pulls them to shore. Yeshuah is the Yod in action: the Hand which plunges into the water and rises towards the light.
3. יֹבֵל (Yovel) — “The Jubilee”
The institution of the Jubilee (Lev 25) — every 50 years, liberation of slaves, return of lands to their original owners, cancellation of debts — begins with a Yod. Yovel also designates the ram's horn (shofar) whose blowing proclaims the Jubilee throughout the country. The Jubilee is the cosmic Yod: the moment when everything returns to its origin, when accumulated inequalities are erased, when Grace resets the counters to zero. Jesus Himself will open His ministry by reading Isaiah 61—the Jubilee text—and saying, “This day is this Scripture fulfilled” (Luke 4:21). The Yod of Jubilee is Grace which announces: no one is permanently lost, no debt is eternal, every story can start again.
