Kenosis (Voluntary Self-Emptying)
EN — Transliteration: Kénōsis
Kenosis is the act of voluntarily emptying oneself of privileges by choice. Coming from the verb kenoō (to empty), this concept describes Christ's voluntary relinquishing of divine status to fully assume fragile and mortal human condition. It is the ultimate expression of love that holds nothing back.
Kenosis (κένωσις) comes from the verb kenoō, which means to empty, to make empty, to reduce to nothing. The term is immortalized in the famous hymn of Philippians 2:7: 'he emptied himself (heautòn ekénōsen), taking the form of a servant...'
🏺 The Paradox of Fullness through Emptiness
The refusal of accumulation: Unlike human rulers who accumulate power and status, kenosis shows a God who expresses himself in the opposite movement: descent, emptying, total sharing. Divinity does not consist in controlling everything, but in giving everything.
Real incarnation: Kenosis asserts that Jesus actually emptied his divine condition to live human limitation: fatigue, hunger, sadness, and death. It is not a god disguised as a man (docetism), it is total human solidarity.
A community ethic: Paul uses the hymn of kenosis not as a simple abstract dogma, but as a practical rule of life: 'Have in you the same mind that was in Christ Jesus...' (Phil 2:5) — giving up one's privileges to serve the other.
🏛️ Religious Triumphalism
The imperial church: While Christ emptied himself of his glory, the institution rushed to fill itself with temporal power, wealth, and honorific titles. The papal triumphalism and the alliance with the imperial sword are the exact antithesis of kenosis.
The theology of glory: Instead of the theology of the Cross and self-emptying (kenosis), the religious system developed a theology of glory and spiritual success, where divine blessing is measured by the power, wealth, and influence of the institution.
