Basilea (Reign / Sovereignty in Action)

EN — Transliteration: Basileía

Basilea is not a geographically defined territorial kingdom, nor a coercive political empire, nor the Church as an institution. It is the exercise of reign, God's sovereignty in action. Translated as 'kingdom', this term describes the establishment of an alternative order based on justice, peace, and joy, present 'in your midst' and upsetting earthly empires.

📖 Réf. : Mt 6:10 | Mt 6:33 | Mk 1:15 | Lk 17:21 | Rom 14:17 | 1 Cor 4:20

The word Basilea (βασιλεία) denotes the reign, sovereignty, or royalty of a monarch. In the Greco-Roman world, it designated the empire of Caesar or Hellenistic dynasties — characterized by absolute military, fiscal, and hierarchical power.

👑 The Alternative and Dynamic Reign

A dynamic, not a territory: The *Basilea tou Theou* (reign of God) is not a place in heaven or a future geography. It is the event where God actually reigns in hearts, relationships, and social structures. It is divine sovereignty in action.

Lc 17:21: Immediate presence: 'The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed... For behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.' Basilea is already active, invisible but real, incarnated in the community of free believers.

Rom 14:17: An ethical nature: 'For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.' Basilea is manifested by fruits of transformed life, not by dietary codes or external rites.

🏛️ The Clericalization of the Kingdom

Identifying the Church with the Kingdom: From Augustine on, the visible Church was identified with the basilea on earth. This confusion allowed for equating the expansion of the territorial power of the papacy with the advancement of God's reign, justifying religious wars and colonialism.

The heavenly postponement: To neutralize the subversive impact of basilea (which declares the poor heirs of the earth), classical Christian preaching moved the kingdom to 'the beyond' (the paradise of souls), defusing the immediate contestation of earthly injustices.
