Soma (Body / Incarnation / Whole Person)
EN — Transliteration: Sōma
The word Soma refers to the physical body in its concrete materiality and dignity of existence. Translated as 'body', it was despised by Christian ascetic dualism which saw it as an inferior sinful envelope (confused with sarx, the rebellious flesh). In the NT, the soma is the temple of the Spirit (1 Cor 6:19) and the site of authentic spiritual incarnation.
The word Soma (σῶμα) denotes the unified and living organic body. Unlike the word sarx (flesh as corruptible and unstable biological material), the soma represents the concrete person in their physical existence and bodily dignity.
🔬 Soma vs Sarx: Body Dignity vs Dualism
Platonic and Gnostic inheritance: Medieval theology equated soma with sarx, despising the physical body as the source of all sins (especially sexual) and the prison of the soul. This diabolisation froze Christians in permanent bodily guilt.
The temple of the Spirit (1 Cor 6:19-20): Paul asserts on the contrary: 'Your body (soma) is the temple of the Pneuma Hagion... Glorify God in your body.' The body is not a neutral or contemptible envelope; it is the sacred place of God's presence.
Spiritual incarnation (Rom 12:1): 'Offer your bodies (somata) as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your logical worship.' Worship does not take place in an abstract mystical sphere, but is embodied in the real gestures of the body daily (justice, sharing, service).
🏛️ The Clericalization of the Social Body
Hierarchical identification of the Body of Christ: In 1 Cor 12, Paul describes the Church as a body (soma) where the weakest members are honored first. Clerical structures shifted this metaphor to justify a pyramid hierarchy: the Pope or bishop is the untouchable head, and the laity are the submissive lower members, destroying the original circularity and democracy.
Control of bodies: By guilt-tripping the physical body and meticulously regulating sexuality, marriage, and earthly pleasures, the institution established its psychological grip on the private lives of the faithful. Controlling the soma was the key to controlling the psyche.
Perspective Conceptuelle
Symbolic Visualization: A harmonious human silhouette silhouetted against a background of light, celebrating the dignity of the body.
