Hypokrytēs (The Actor / The Stage Player)

EN — Transliteration: Hypokritḗs

Hypokrytes (ὑποκριτής) originally denoted a theater actor in the Greek world, who wears a mask to play a role. Jesus uses this word to denounce the theatrical posture of religious leaders who play a role of piety to gain human glory.

📖 Réf. : Mt 6:2 | Mt 6:5 | Mt 23:13 | Lk 12:1

Hypokrytes is the word for religious performance. It describes the attitude of those who transform spiritual life into a theatrical display to be seen and admired.

🎭 The Stage Mask

In ancient Greek theater, the hypokritēs is the one who answers the chorus. He wears a large mask that projects his voice and hides his real expressions. Jesus uses this theatrical metaphor with biting irony: the scribes and Pharisees who display their righteousness in public wear a mask of piety, playing a role written for human audience while their hearts are empty.
