Eschaton (Ultimate Horizon / Final End)

EN — Transliteration: Éschaton

Eschaton refers to what is ultimate, last, or at the end of a process. Translated as 'end of the world' or 'end of times', it was reduced to a catastrophic scenario of cosmic destruction and fear of the end. In the NT, it is the breaking in of God's purpose, the ultimate horizon of peace and reconciliation that reconfigures and gives hope to the present, a glorious beginning rather than an annihilation.

📖 Réf. : Jn 6:39 | Jn 12:48 | Rom 8:19 | 1 Cor 15:24 | Gal 1:4 | 2 Pet 3:13 | Rev 21:1

Eschaton (ἔσχατος) refers to the final point, the last term of a series, what completes a historical or cosmic development. Eschatology is reflection on the ultimate purpose (*telos*) of creation, not its physical destruction.

🌅 The Horizon of Peace vs The Apocalypse of Terror

The eschaton as beginning: In biblical thought, the eschaton is not void or nuclear catastrophe. It is the event where God wipes away every tear, abolishes death, and establishes a renewed creation (Rev 21:1-4). It is a mourning of systems of oppression and a birth of life.

Realized eschatology (Jn 6:39): Jesus asserts that the reign and eternal life are already present. The eschaton is not only a distant future event, it is an eternal reality that overflows into our history to subvert it.

Rom 8:19-21: The liberation of creation: The eschaton is the event where the entire creation is set free from corruption to enjoy glorious freedom. It is not the annihilation of matter, but its transfiguration.

🏛️ The Manipulation of the Fear of the End

Punitive catastrophism: Religious systems have often exploited the eschaton to arouse fear of the end of the world and the last judgment. Dramatizing cosmic destruction and the torments of hell allowed for subjecting the faithful, inciting them to submit to the institution to escape the disaster to come.

Escapism and contempt for the earth: Developing a destructive apocalyptic eschatology ('the earth will burn') encouraged a Christian lack of interest in ecology, social engagement, and historical justice. If creation is to be destroyed, it becomes useless to care for it or defend it.
