Parakletos (Advocate / Defender / Called Beside)

EN — Transliteration: Paráklētos

Parakletos literally means one who is called to one's side to defend us in a trial, a defense counsel, a legal advocate. Translated as 'Comforter' or 'Advocate', the term was weakened into passive emotional comfort. The NT Parakletos is not a tear-dryer, but a combative lawyer who pleads our case against the accuser (diabolos), restoring our dignity and strength.

📖 Réf. : Jn 14:16 | Jn 14:26 | Jn 15:26 | Jn 16:7 | 1 Jn 2:1

The word Parakletos (παράκλητος) is formally a passive verbal adjective derived from parakaléō — to call near oneself. In classical and legal Greek, it denotes the advocate, the defender, the witness called to the stand to support the accused in a criminal trial.

⚖️ The Defense Attorney vs The Accuser

The spiritual trial: Johannine thought presents life as a moral trial. On one side stands the Accuser (diabolos, satan), who produces internal guilt and condemnation. On the other side stands the Parakletos (the Spirit), who pleads free acquittal and recalls the unconditionality of Grace.

Deliverance from guilt: In 1 Jn 2:1, Jesus is called our Parakletos with the Father. The advocate is not there to soften the penalty or deny the fault, but to present the total acquittal established by his love. Our defense is assured in advance.

A combative force (Jn 16:8): The Parakletos does not merely passively comfort the disciples: he proves the world wrong about sin, righteousness, and judgment. It is an active intellectual and moral force that fights the lie of the system.

🏛️ The Passivisation by the 'Comforter'

The Vulgate and Sentimental Comfort: Saint Jerome translated parakletos as Consolator in Latin, directing the concept toward the emotional register of comforting the afflicted. Although this dimension exists, reducing the legal advocate to a simple passive tear-dryer obscured his role as a legal defender and combat power against the guilt instilled by religious moral structures.

The monopoly of priestly mediation: By making the clergy the sole dispenser of forgiveness and grace on earth, the medieval Church set aside the free inner Parakletos. Believers had to pay and confess to a priest (who became a paid lawyer and a punitive judge) instead of trusting the divine free lawyer housed within them.
