Makrothumia (Patience / Long-suffering)

EN — Transliteration: Makrothymía

Makrothumia (μακροθυμία) is composed of 'makros' (long, large) and 'thumos' (anger, passion). It literally means 'having a long breath before anger'. It is the ability to offer a vast inner space and a deep breath face to offense and time.

📖 Réf. : Rom 2:4 | 1 Cor 13:4 | Gal 5:22 | Col 3:12 | 2 Pet 3:15

Makrothumia is active divine patience. Far from simple resignation, it is the voluntary extension of our inner space to accommodate the other's timeline.

💨 The Long Breath of Grace

The thumos is impulsive anger, the fire that flares up quickly. Having makrothumia means possessing a breath reserve so large that this fire finds no oxygen to ignite immediately. It is the first characteristic of love in 1 Corinthians 13: 'Love is patient (makrothumei)'.
