Etymology & Roots
Sēmeion (σημεῖον) derives from sēma (σῆμα — mark, seal, signpost). In classical Greek, it designates a distinctive indicator pointing toward a destination. In John's Gospel and Mark 16:17, miracles are never called thauma (raw astonishment) but sēmeia: living signposts whose sole purpose is to point exclusively to the person and finished work of Christ.
