Oikonomos (The Steward / Household Manager)
EN — Transliteration: Oikonomos
Oikonomos (οἰκονόμος) comes from 'oikos' (house) + 'nomos' (law/management). It designates the manager of a household who distributes food and goods but owns nothing.
The oikonomos is the manager of another's resources. In the context of the Church, they are the steward of the riches of divine grace, with no ownership rights over the flock.
🔑 The Butler of Grace
In Greco-Roman society, the oikonomos was often a trusted slave or freedman tasked with directing other servants, managing accounts, and distributing food. Paul adopts this role to define his function: he is the steward of the 'mysteries of God' (1 Cor 4:1). He distributes the truth of grace, but the house (the oikos) belongs exclusively to the Master. The flock are his fellow servants, not his subordinates.
