Bereshit (The Primal Intention / At the Summit of the Beginning)
EN — Transliteration: Bᵉrēʾšît
Bereshit (בְּרֵאשִׁית) is the first word of the Hebrew Bible — and its meaning goes beyond simple temporal location 'in the beginning'. Composed of B (in/at the summit of) + reshit (head, summit, premise), it means 'in the head, at the summit, from the original premise'. Rabbis long meditated why the Torah began with a B (beth) and not Aleph (A) — suggesting that the biblical beginning is already the second moment: there is a divine intention that precedes even the first word.
Bereshit (בְּרֵאשִׁית) is both the first word of Genesis and a philosophically concentrated term of extraordinary density. The Hebrew masters said: 'The Torah begins with B (beth) because beth is open on the side — all that precedes remains mystery.' There is a before-the-beginning.

|---|---|---|
| B- (ב) | Preposition | In, at, at the summit of, from |

📖 Genesis 1:1 — Literal Translation
Hebrew: בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ
Literal: "At the summit of the premise, Elohim created (bara) the heavens and the earth."
The standard translation 'In the beginning' (LXX: En archē) erases the richness of reshit. It can also be translated 'for the premise' or 'with Wisdom as firstfruit' — opening the possibility that creation is founded on an intention (Wisdom, Pr 8:22-23) rather than on simple chronology.
💡 Proverbs 8:22-23 — Pre-existent Wisdom
"The Lord created (qanah) me as reshit of his ways, as the first of his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, before the earth existed."
Wisdom (Hokhmah) describes herself as God's reshit — his first 'head', his primal intention. This suggests bereshit in Gn 1:1 could be translated 'by/with Wisdom [as firstfruit], Elohim created' — exactly corresponding to John 1:3's 'In him (Logos) all things were created'.
Perspective Conceptuelle
Symbolic Visualization: The very first ray of light piercing absolute primordial darkness — the moment of divine intention crystallizing into existence.
