Eleutheria (Freedom from Slavery / Liberty)
EN — Transliteration: Eleuthería
Eleutheria does not mean the mere right to act on whims (license). It is the status of the free citizen as opposed to the slave. Translated as 'freedom', this term in Paul's writings refers to radical liberation from systems of guilt, coercive Law, and fear of death, to enter the responsibility of mutual love.
Eleutheria (ἐλευθερία) in the Greek city is above all a political and social status: it is the condition of the free man (eleutheros) who depends on no master, as opposed to the slave (doulos).
🔓 Spiritual and Social Freedom in Paul
Liberation from the Law (Galatians 5:1): 'It is for freedom (eleutheria) that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.' Paul targets coercive religious Law, the obligation of rites, and ritualized guilt.
The responsibility of love (Galatians 5:13): 'Do not use your freedom as an excuse to live according to the flesh; but serve one another humbly in love.' Eleutheria is not selfish independence (license), but the capacity to choose to love without being forced by fear.
Rom 8:21: Cosmic freedom: Creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay into the glorious freedom of the children of God.
🏛️ Redomestication by the Institution
The return of coercion: Quickly, the Church breathed back a spirit of servitude by recreating a system of laws, sins, and punishments. The Christian freedom proclaimed by Paul was smothered under strict disciplinary regulations.
Legitimization of social slavery: By over-spiritualizing eleutheria ('be free internally'), institutions could justify the physical and social enslavement of millions of human beings, asserting that social freedom had no spiritual importance.
Perspective Conceptuelle
Symbolic Visualization: Broken chains lying on the ground, classical symbol of release from bondage.
