Pe ({literal})
EN — Transliteration: Pe
Letter Pe (פ) of the Hebrew alphabet, with a numerical value of 80. The Organ of Creation — The Divine Mouth whose Word structures the Universe.
I. Anatomy of the Mystery — The Trace of the Pe
The Pe (פ) is the seventeenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and its layout is one of the richest in hidden revelation. Seen from the outside, the Pe is a closed curve on the right with a small tongue curving inward — a mouth with its tongue, ready to speak.
But look inside the letter: the masters of Hebrew mysticism discern there a Beth (ב) lodged in the womb of the Pe. The house is inside the mouth. Each word is a house — a built, habitable space that houses something living. The word of Grace is an architecture: it does not let words fall into a void — it builds dwellings in which the beloved can dwell.
Like Mem and Nun, Pe exists in two shapes :
- The **Normal Pe** (פ): the mouth *open*, with the tongue visible inside — the speech in progress, the word being formed.
- The final **Pe** (ף): the mouth *closed*, stretched out under the line - the word *accomplished*, the word settled, the silence of the one who said what he had to say.
Its numerical value — 80 — is the age (Aion) of Moses before Pharaoh. Moses, who defined himself as a man with a heavy mouth (kaved peh — Ex 4:10), became at the age (Aion) of 80 the instrument of the most resounding Word of deliverance (Soteria) in the entire history of Israel. The Father of Grace does not need a perfect mouth — he needs a mouth open.

II. The Mouth and the Face — Pe and the Grace that Names
In Hebrew, the word panim (פָּנִים — face, face) is the plural form of pe — or at least shares its root. The Hebrew face is first of all what is turned towards the other (pneh — to turn): an orientation, a direction, an oriented presence (Parousia). And at the heart of the face, there is the mouth.
Divine Grace operates first as appointment — she names before transforming. God said to Abram, “Your name will be Abraham” (Gen 17:5). He said to Jacob, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel” (Gen 32:29). He said to Simon, “You will be called Peter” (Jn 1:42). Each time, the divine mouth precedes the transformation — the Father creates what he names. Grace does not first transform, then rename: it first said, and reality follows the word.

III. Key Word Study — The Emanations of the Pe
1. פֶּה (Peh) — “The Mouth”
The Hebrew mouth is the organ of speech but also of confession (הוֹדַאָה — hodaah : recognize, confess, thank — same root). To confess in Hebrew is not to confess a fault under duress: it is name reality with your mouth — recognize what is, whether it is the grace received (praise), the fault committed (repentance) or the faith held (confession). Paul will say it precisely: “It is by confessing with the mouth (stomati homologeō) that one achieves restoration (sōteria)” (Rom 10:10). The mouth that names the truth participates in its creation.
2. פָּנִים (Panim) — “Face, Face” (always plural)
The Hebrew face is always in the plural — panim — like water (mayim). There cannot be a single, fixed face: the face is always multiple, always in motion, always oriented towards the other. The Aaronic blessing (Nu 6:24-26) asks that God make His face shine (panim) upon us — not that He looks at us from behind a divine mask, but that He turns entirely towards us, that all His presence (Parousia) is tour facing us. Grace is this divine face oriented towards man.
3. פְּדוּת (Pedut) — “Redemption, Liberation”
Redemption — pedut (פְּדוּת) — begins with a Pe. The root padah (פָּדָה) refers to the redemption of a lost slave or property—the gesture of one who pays the price to set free. “There is redemption with the LORD (pedut), and he redeems (yifdeh) Israel from all her iniquities” (Ps 130:7-8). The redemption of the Pe is a redemption which says — it is proclaimed before being lived. The mouth of God announces freedom (Eleutheria), and freedom (Eleutheria) begins the moment the Word is spoken. This is the kerygma apostolic — the announcement (kēryssein) which liberates by the very fact of being said.
